Online tutoring with OUA

University subjects are challenging, especially if you haven’t studied for a long time or written certain types of documents such as essays or case studies.

SMARTHINKING can help as an academic support for helping you develop your writing, mathematics and other skills you may need. The e-structor does not correct work – rather helps guide you to develop your own understanding and skills.

The academic support services are:

Live online tutoring: Students work synchronously with an e-structor.
Online Writing Lab (OWL): students submit a draft of their writing for guidance on areas that require some consideration. E-structors respond to this within 24 hours.
Submit a question: students post a question for e-structors to respond to within 24 hours.
Students can pre-schedule a session with an e-structor also. OUA trials of SMARTHINKING’S OWL service have so far shown that, generally, students who used the service:

achieve better grades

found that e-structor feedback helped them develop their writing skills

enjoyed their units more

felt they had overall better outcomes in subject matter courses

evaluated it highly and recommended it to others

Who uses SMARTHINKING

This semester Open Universities will provide FOUR hours of free SMARTHINKING support for a wide range of units. For instance, you might use these 4 hours to have an e-structor review your assignments and schedule a session with an e-structor to help you with a question that might prove tricky – or work on a maths formula to help you tackle your practice tasks.

You can access Smarthinking.com through your OUA Active Units page. To do this you need to:

Log in to Open Universities Australia at http://www.open.edu.au/
From here go to MY AREA and then click on ACTIVE UNITS where you will see the SMARTHINKING icon that allows you to get to Smarthinking.com
