Lizzie Corrie 2007 AFL Mother of the Year
The AFL Players' Association is pleased to announce that Lizzie Corrie, mother of Melbourne's Aaron and Essendon's Alwyn Davey is the winner of the third annual AFLPA / Kangaroos Network of Women (KNOW) Mother of the Year award.
Lizzie's win was announced by AFLPA President Joel Bowden at a gala cocktail function at Victoria University organised by the Kangaroos Network of Women.
Nominated by sons Aaron and Alwyn Davey, Lizzie was judged Mother of the Year by a judging panel consisting of Age Chief Football Writer Caroline Wilson, Melbourne FC Board Member Karen Hayes, AFL Manager of People & Culture Jane Hollman, National Ovarian Cancer Network CEO Karen Livingstone, Jo Curkpatrick from KNOW and AFLPA CEO Brendon Gale.
In their nomination, the Davey brothers paid tribute to their Mum's long term contribution towards their football development, writing,
"We would like to nominate Mum (Lizzie) and hopefully she can be recognized for all the great work she did to bringing up both of us boys up and helping us achieve our goals of playing AFL football.
"She always found a way to put the money together which allowed both of us to be given the opportunity to achieve our goals," Aaron and Alwyn Davey wrote.
The first woman to be granted a life membership with the Palmerston Magpies FC in Darwin, Lizzie's commitment to both boys' careers was duly recognised by the awards judges.
Lizzie's abilities to meet the challenges of having her two boys relocate to Melbourne from to undertake their brilliant football journey, left the judges in no doubt that Lizzie is a super mum.
Sally Pettifer, mother of Richmond's Kayne Pettifer along with Faye Tuck, mother of Richmond's Shane and Hawthorn's Travis were also named equal runners up of the award.
Entries for the award were received from players across Australia.
