The AFL player Mother of the Year award honours the crucial role mothers’ play in the on and off-field development of their AFL playing sons.

Organised by the Kangaroos Network of Women & the AFL Players’ Association, the award recognises Annette Campbell’s contribution to Rob’s development as a person & footballer.

The high quality nominations from AFL players’ nation wide made the task of settling on a single award winner particularly difficult.

The judging panel of Jo Turton; Kangaroos Network of Women; Steven Alessio, AFLPA General Manager Player Development; Brett Burton, AFLPA Vice-President and Natalie Jennings; Manager at Ovarian Cancer, finally settled on Annette Campbell who displayed an outstanding level of support and assistance towards Rob and his AFL career.

In his nomination, Rob Campbell noted Annette’s strong level of support, from committed grass roots encouragement which saw Annette honk the car horn every time the future Hawk got near the footy at junior games, to playing a crucial role in Rob’s rehabilitation from a season ending knee injury in 2005.

But perhaps, Annette’s contribution is best described by Rob who in his nomination stated, “She is the most extraordinary person I have ever met.”

One of the AFL’s many rookie system success stories, Rob was elevated off the Hawks rookie list in 2001, and went on to play in Hawthorn’s 2008 AFL premiership side.

Bev Young, mother of Hawthorn’s Clinton Young, Chiki Boak, mother of Port Adelaide’s Travis Boak and Pam Clarke, mother of St Kilda’s Xavier and Raphael Clarke were also named equal runners up of the award.
